GTA launches Ghana Tourism Information System to Drive Digital Transformation in Tourism Sector

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has officially launched the Ghana Tourism Information System (GTIS), a major digital initiative aimed at modernizing tourism administration, improving sector-wide data management, strengthening regulation, and enhancing Ghana’s competitiveness within the global tourism industry.

The launch event, held at Accra City Hotel, brought together captains of industry, management and staff of the GTA, tourism stakeholders, development partners, private sector operators, and other invited guests to witness what officials described as a transformative step toward smart tourism governance in Ghana.

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of Marketing and Special Duties, Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey, served as Master of Ceremony for the event.

Delivering the Welcome Address and Purpose of Gathering, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of Operations, Ekow Sampson, described the Ghana Tourism Information System as a strategic intervention that would significantly improve tourism administration and coordination within the sector.

According to Ekow Sampson, “The future of tourism development depends heavily on data, innovation, and efficient systems. The Ghana Tourism Information System will provide the platform needed to improve planning, regulation, and service delivery across the tourism value chain.”

Also delivering remarks at the event was the Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of General Services, Ben Anane Nsiah, who commended the GTA for championing digital transformation within the tourism sector.

According to Ben Anane Nsiah, “This initiative demonstrates that Ghana’s tourism sector is preparing itself for the future through innovation, coordination, and institutional modernization.”

The event also featured an interactive questions and answers session, which provided stakeholders and participants the opportunity to seek clarifications, share perspectives, and engage management of the GTA on the objectives, implementation, and long-term impact of the Ghana Tourism Information System.

The Ghana Tourism Information System is expected to provide a centralized digital platform for tourism data collection, licensing and registration processes, tourism intelligence, compliance monitoring, sector analytics, and stakeholder coordination.

Speaking before the official launch, the Chief Executive Officer of the GTA, Maame Efua Houadjeto, stated that the introduction of the system marks a significant shift in how tourism will be managed and positioned for national development.

According to her, “Tourism is no longer simply about attractions and destinations. The future of tourism is driven by information, innovation, efficiency, and strategic intelligence. The Ghana Tourism Information System positions Ghana to compete within a rapidly evolving global tourism environment.”

Maame Efua Houadjeto further noted that the system would support evidence-based decision-making, improve operational efficiency, strengthen sector regulation, and create a more coordinated tourism ecosystem capable of supporting investment growth and improved visitor experiences.

Following her address, Maame Efua Houadjeto officially launched the Ghana Tourism Information System.

Joining the CEO for the official launch ceremony were the three Deputy Chief Executive Officers of the GTA — Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey, Ekow Sampson, and Ben Anane Nsiah — together with the President of the Ghana Tourism Federation, Mr Ocran, and other key leaders within Ghana’s tourism and hospitality industry.

The symbolic launch underscored the collective commitment of stakeholders toward digital transformation, institutional modernization, and the long-term growth of Ghana’s tourism sector.

The launch of the Ghana Tourism Information System forms part of broader efforts by the GTA to accelerate digital transformation within the tourism sector and strengthen Ghana’s position as a leading tourism destination in Africa.

Stakeholders at the event expressed optimism that the initiative would improve transparency, increase investor confidence, enhance destination management, and support the long-term growth of Ghana’s tourism economy.

The GTA reaffirmed its commitment to innovation, institutional modernization, and strategic partnerships aimed at unlocking the full economic potential of tourism in Ghana.
