The Pan African Historical Festival (PANAFEST)

is a cultural event held in Ghana every two years for Africans and people of African descent. Its purpose is to promote and enhance unity, Pan-Africanism, and the development of the continent of Africa.

Since 1992, Ghana has used PANAFEST to offer Africans both on the continent and in the diaspora a sacred space for dialogue. Through music, dance, theatre, spectacle, and visual art, the festival creates room for expression and connection.

It also provides a platform for deeper reflection through debates, conferences, and quiet moments of remembrance. These discussions centre on the period of enslavement and colonialism, and examine their lasting impact on the past, present, and future of Africa and its people.

The Emancipation Day Celebration

The Emancipation Day Celebration organized by the Ghana Tourism Authority is a significant cultural and historical event that commemorates the abolition of slavery and honors the resilience, freedom, and heritage of Africans and people of African descent across the world. Celebrated annually in Ghana, the event serves as a powerful reminder of the struggles endured during the transatlantic slave trade and the triumph of emancipation.

The celebration forms part of Ghana’s efforts to reconnect with the African diaspora and promote Pan-African unity, cultural identity, and historical remembrance. Through various activities such as durbars, wreath-laying ceremonies, cultural performances, lectures, heritage tours, and spiritual rituals, Emancipation Day provides an opportunity for reflection, education, and healing.

As one of the country’s major heritage tourism events, the celebration attracts participants from across Africa, the Caribbean, the Americas, and other parts of the world. It also highlights Ghana’s important historical sites linked to the slave trade, including forts, castles, and memorial centers, while promoting cultural tourism and strengthening Ghana’s position as the gateway to Africa.

Over the years, the Emancipation Day Celebration has become an important platform for promoting African unity, preserving cultural heritage, and fostering global awareness about the history and legacy of slavery. Through this annual observance, the Ghana Tourism Authority continues to use tourism as a tool for cultural preservation, education, and international collaboration.
