The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Maame Efua Houadjeto, has made a strong case for sustainability-driven growth in Ghana’s tourism sector, urging industry stakeholders to embrace green practices as a strategic imperative.
Delivering her address in person at the Ghana Tourism Federation (GHATOF) event held today at Accra City Hotel, the CEO emphasized that the future of tourism lies in environmentally responsible operations backed by innovation and investment.
She highlighted that support mechanisms are already in place to assist businesses willing to transition into sustainable models.
“There is funding available for interested stakeholders to go green. The future of tourism is not just about growth, but about responsible growth—where sustainability becomes a core business strategy, not an afterthought.”
Also speaking at the event, the Director of Tourism at the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Dr. Tamakloe, who represented the sector Minister, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, underscored the importance of collaboration in advancing the sector. He commended both GTA and GHATOF for the initiative, noting that strengthened partnerships and unity across the industry remain critical to unlocking the full potential of Ghana’s tourism economy.
Adding depth to the discussions, the Distinguished Chairman, Nene Drolo—the first Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies Accra and current Chancellor of the Caribbean Maritime University—spoke with remarkable eloquence and precision on the role of individuals in driving tourism.
“Tourism is not about government but about personalities.”
He further emphasized the need for a mindset shift within the industry:
“We are consumers but do not know how to sell.”
In a symbolic and governance-strengthening moment, Nene Drolo also administered the swearing-in of chairpersons for the various GHATOF committees, charging them to lead with vision, accountability, and a renewed commitment to advancing the Federation’s mandate.
The President of GHATOF, in his remarks, reinforced the urgency of the message, calling on members to align with evolving global standards.
“The hospitality and tourism industry must adapt decisively.
Sustainability is no longer a choice—it is the pathway to resilience, competitiveness, and long-term success.”
Also lending his support, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC), Prof. Kobby Mensah, pledged institutional backing for GHATOF’s initiatives.
“GTDC is fully aligned with the vision and activities of GHATOF. We will continue to support programmes that promote sustainability, innovation, and investment across the tourism ecosystem.”
A notable highlight of the event was the presentation of an innovative Green Traditional Kitchen and Bar concept by an astute architect, Rose Ann.
The design demonstrated how Ghanaian culinary and hospitality spaces can be reimagined using eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient systems, while preserving authenticity and cultural heritage.
The engagement at Accra City Hotel underscored a unified commitment among regulators, industry associations, and investment bodies to reposition Ghana’s tourism sector for a sustainable and globally competitive future.
